The first Monday of May is a Bank Holiday in the UK - a Bank Holiday is an official country-wide holiday when banks are closed, as are schools and most work places. In England, Wales and Northern Ireland, the holiday is known as May Day; in Scotland, it is more commonly referred to as Early May Bank Holiday, to differentiate it from the second May Bank Holiday, which takes place at the end of the month and coincides with Whitsun, or Pentecost.
May Day is believed to have originated from a pagan festival, probably to do with fertility rituals. For this reason, there have been attempts to make the holiday illegal, but it has nevertheless continued - even though many people aren't really aware of the purpose of May Day. The holiday is now often associated with workers' rights, and there are often marches and demonstrations arranged to coincide with May Day, although they are usually peaceful.
